IBM’s Institute for Business Value has just published a report entitled Device democracy: Saving the future of the Internet of Things. This is a far reaching and visionary work especially when compared to some of the rather limp Points of View or Strategies on the IoT that currently abound.
The report neatly identifies some of the fundamental problems inherent in our collective approach to building the Internet of Things (IoT) such as the lack of suitable business models, a flawed approach to security & privacy and the inability of the current device-to-cloud paradigm to efficiently scale to hundreds of billions of devices. It then goes on to outline an entirely new communication and compute architecture for the IoT and describes how such a transformation will disrupt marketplaces, value chains and the design of autonomous systems.
If that sounds ambitious, then that’s because it is. It is the first in a series of publications based on a three track research program that IBM has undertaken with a range of partners and advisors. This program will go on to investigate and detail some of the concepts outlined in this first report.
Does the report flawlessly predict the future and present a perfect new architecture and approach to building the Internet of Things? Probably not. Is it thought provoking, bold and likely to cause you to question your own thinking and approach to the Internet of Things? Absolutely.
I strongly encourage you to take the time to read it and provide comment and feedback, either to the authors directly or in the comments below.
